Title: school administration software
Post by: Volker Dirr on August 14, 2013, 08:23:28 AM
Hi,

I want to know which school administration do you use (Also please add a hyperlink to the webpage and write a small comment about that software)
you can also write which software you (just) know (but don't use). But i will list only *A and *B (see later) in this first message; because I guess there are a few thousand school administration software  tools available.

I will split them in 3 categories and list the first 2 ones (*A and *B (see later)) here:
*A: open source software
*B: software usage forced (or highly recommended) by your government
*C: other closed source software

Now the list (update last time: 2019-10-06):

*A: open source software:
see https://lalescu.ro/liviu/fet/toolslinks.html

*B: software usage forced (or highly recommended) by your government:

Volker, why not write in the first message also *C? Also, expand *A?

about *C: if you search with google, you will find very easy a lot of software, i didn't count, because there are to many.
about *A: because i don't want to double post. you already have a nice list.

But if also other guys think i should add also *A and/or *C, then i will do that.

I realize that this topic is a bit dated; but, now that I have FET working it is time to add some complexity to my life again.  I am interested in recommendations for school administration software.

In particular I need:
Easy to set up and use -- This is a must and I realize it is very subjective

Student register
Attendance tracking
Grade tracking

I would really:
Discipline activity tracking

We are a private school; so I would also like:
Tuition and fees tracking

Linux is fine, I need it to be accessible by the teachers, ideally from individual computers on the network (we really don't have a network yet, I am arguing with our parent organization about that)

SchoolWrite should cover your requirements works in Windows environment. You will need an emulator to run in Linux.

Ahh... thank you. I didn't read about that software yet.

I can see on wikipedia:
EduWave Jordan,2003
EduWave Bahrain, 2004-2009
EduWave U.S, 2004-2009
EduWave "Noor Project" Saudi Arabia, 2011

So does that mean it is out of date in all nations?

Maybe i am wrong, but it look like it is "only" a "you can use", but not a "forced" software by government in most nations. So it is *C and not *B.
If i understood correct, then it is only "forced/(highly recommended)" in Bahrain. So (if not out of date, because it is 2004-2009) it was only *B in Bahrain.

Let us know more.

If you tell me the Nation (and maybe also Region) where this software is "forced" (or highly recommended. For example for you statistics) I will add it into my first post into *B. Please give me a a link to the support page or proclamation page of the government (with nation and maybe also region).) (Or if you can confirm it is still up to date in Bahrain, i will add Bahrain in my first post.)

ah. ok. do you have links to the goverments?
it looks like Jordan, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia is still up to date, but i found only short news in the papers, not from goverment.
from usa i found only Oklahoma State.
Its "only" pre-approves, but looks like forced by goverment now.
I will add the link to Oklahoma in my first post. Let me know if you have more links to "better" goverments site. (Because that site doesn't contain a download.)
The financial report of Oklahoma is very intresting: a few 100.000 $ just for installing. A few more 100.000 $ just for support of the first year. and much more ... if i compare with our donating page :-(

Thank you. I don't like the links very much, because they contain only login site, but as long as i don't have "better" links i added them in my first post.
Thank you. I updated my first post.

All tools from category A are free (open source).
All Germany tools from category B are also free (free to use, but not all open source).

Do you offer free software and services?
FET is only "free", because Liviu and me spend a lot of time and money into this project. Luckily also a few other guys spent money (see donation page) or time (translators and moderators, ...). So if you like FET or other "free" software, then be fair and pay the developers, since they need money to buy food, pay the flat, pay the web server, ... Just count the money from the donation page. You will see that it is impossible to pay web server, current and food from that money. In fact there isn't enough money to rent a flat from that money. I can't count how many hours i spent into coding FET, translating FET, helping in the forum, ... And I got exactly 0 € donations so far in all that many years. That is exactly the reason why I was forced to publish TiTiTo closed source only. But even with that money I still haven't got enough to pay the mirror server so that guys like you can download FET and other software for free...

Yes, sadly a very difficult topic. And there are even more worse problems because of unpaid open source coders. Just read about the Linux news from this month. The news about the backdoor attacks on the xz utils of Linux. If you read the background stories it is in fact only possible, because most of (the low number of) open source developers are not paid. I love open source, but it is working only if a lot of guys are helping. It doesn't work if a lot of guys are using it only without helping.

Yes you are right, user help would be very useful for the improvement of the application and the survival of the developer.  but we are going through very difficult times.  Hoping this changes very soon...

What are you always talking about "all are paid"?
All from category A are FREE / open source (all are at least in English).
Also all German applications from category B are also FREE (to use. At least one is party open source (the server so far only, not the client. The cient is "only" free to use).
