Title: University and electives
Post by: Auralsculpture on October 22, 2013, 07:37:56 AM
I have tried FET before and had some success but now my situation has changed and I need a much more sophisticated approach.  This is really to ask if the program will suit me before I invest a lot of time

We have 5 degree programs each with 6 terms.
Each of these 30 cohorts has designated classes, BUT
Some cohorts have common classes, eg core units taught across Trimester 1 -
Many (including the common units) will have a lecture plus a tutorial each week
Some activities require particular rooms, eg labs.
If I have 250 students in a common unit and a preferred room with capacity 80, will the software automatically split the groups?  ie students will end up in multiple groups ...

FET won't split up groups automaticly just by number of students.
so:
a) You must tell FET which students should get into which group.
OR
b) split up the year into groups (manualy OR with fet automatic split year). So you must tell each students which group he/she is.

Hello all,
Being already a long-time user of FET (Thanks Liviu & Volker!) I am encountering now another issue....I have a particular year being divided into 17 groups that on their term have several subdivisions/modules...
As I see I have the possibility of dividing only into
16 groups...

Any advice?.....(//)

I am reluctant to add more divisions, because 16 is already a big number.

The additional subdivisions are such that you really need to use "Automatic year division"? If not, you could divide manually (add manually groups and subgroups).

If yes, a solution would be to define Year_X_Group_1 ... Year_X_Group_17 as years and divide them. This way, you can even get more categories (4 of them).

Please let me know as soon as possible, I am preparing to release the new version this afternoon, and I would like to ensure all problems are solved.

I am thinking of allowing up to 20 divisions in the first category - would that be enough?

yes Liviu, 20 would be great!
for sure you understand what I am talking about...I have a year that is divided clasically in 17 groups...but the year works in modules, regardless of groups...so simply adding 17 groups (as I did until this year) is not sufficient as I have to deal with g1 subdivided in module 1,2 and 3....and this for all 17 groups.... :o
I know it it awqward, but this situation appeared only this year due to a dramatic reduction in student number/group....
PS. If it is a matter of a great work, I can use the trick suggested by you, no problem......so do not modify everything just for me....I will come soon with other suggestions and questions :D

It was not that easy, but I did it. It seems to work, but I need to check it and make minor cosmetics tomorrow (in fact today :) ). I'll announce the new snap in the corresponding section and here. You'll love it - 12 categories, the only restriction is 30,000 max subgroups.

Thanks Liviu, it seems like everything is OK, no issues encountered so far...

Thank you! In the meantime, I released a lot of other snapshots. Maybe you could try the latest, if your work is not highly critical. Maybe you could also test it, like adding/removing students sets and checking the constraints/activities after the removal.

Hello,
I'm back again with another question related to arrangements of students groups etc.
Is it possible to set the use of a set of activities for a specific number of days?
I mean a similar function like the one in "time/teachers" submenu (minim/maxim days per week).......I have used the function "max days between a set of activities" but it seems not the right one as it groups activities in X succeeding days (and I do not necessarily want that, as my goal would be just to leave 1 or 2 days without activity at a department)?

Why can't you use students max days per week? (but unfortunately there is no students min days per week - do you need this?)

Unfortunately that is not applicable as it refers to the entire student group for all subjects....I need for only one subject in one dept that uses a specific lab.....

I think this trick should work: for each affected students set, add a dummy students set. To each affected activity of this students set and the affected subject add also this corresponding dummy students set. Then add 1 or 2 dummy activities for the dummy students set, duration = n_hours_per_day.

Please let me know.
