Title: Cannot optimize subgroup because hours are greater then in week
Post by: MarkB on December 17, 2014, 12:57:41 PM
Below has now been resolved but now I have a different issue!

Firstly I just want to say what an impressive piece of software FET is and how grateful I am for your work on it.

Basically I've input a load of activities and now trying to generate a timetable but its stuck on 22 of 39. I've still got a long way to go before I've completed the entire schedule but want to check the timetable is looking OK every time I've entered a load of data.

I've been racking my brains to see what I'm doing wrong here and why this activity will not allow the timetable to populate. Any ideas?

Kind regards,

Mark

OK so I have a year of students who work on differant modules but share the same class. For example our Business students go to the same english classes as our Art students.

I've set these english classes as subgroups and all seemed to be find until I tried to generate the timetable.

I'm getting the following error:

Cannot optimize for subgroup EAP (1a), because the number of hours for subgroup is 69 and you have only 5 days x 8 hours in a week.

All I need is the same class to be shared across a number of groups with the same teachers, time and room.

Reuploaded my current save file, hugely appreciated for looking at this.

Mark the error you are receiving has nothing to do with the room allocation.

You have 40 time slots available in your week (cycle) and you have allocated 69 time slots to subgroup EAP(1a).

A mistake I often made was to allocate activities to the group that should actually only be allocated to the subgroup. In other words English should be allocated to the entire group, but Business must only be for that subgroup and Art must be for that subgroup.

I hope this helps. My explanations are normally very difficult.

Your main problem is that you didn't understood the students structure correct.
You have got 5*8=40 hours per week.
But now have a look to FET -> Statistics -> Students. Check subgroups only (not groups nor years)
As you can see there are subgroups with 69 hours per week. That is impossible of course.
Then open the attached file. Generate the timetable (it generates, because i deleted a few constraints and increased the number of hours).
Now check the generated timetables. I hope you will understand now why your students structure is incorrect.

Gents,

Thank you very much for your replies, I've come in this morning after a night's sleep and with your helpful suggestions I'm sure I can work this out.
