Title: theoretical and practical classes
Post by: Huda on February 19, 2018, 08:17:47 AM
Hello there,
Our program consists of 8 levels. For each level, students are divided in groups. Some courses have theoretical and practical classes. For theoretical classes in general students are divided into two groups. And for the practical classes students are divided into 4 groups due to the limited capacity of the labs. For example:
Sam teaches Computer Networks (THEORETICAL) for level 4 (Group A + Group B) [students are divided int 2 groups]
Sara teach Computer Networks (LAB) for level 4 (Group C + Group D + Group E + Group F) [same students are divided into 4 groups]

How can I assign activities in this case?

Thanks,

Hello Huda,

I'm not sure if I'm qualified to assist you with your problem, but if I will give it a go.

I would discard Group E and Group F. Only have Group A, Group B, Group C and Group D.

For the Theoretical classes, combine Group A and Group B in one activity and combine Group C and Group D in another activity.

For the Lab classes assign each group in a  separate activity.

Thank you, Bobby, for taking care of this! However, I have a different idea:

Divide year Level 4 by 2 categories (there is a button in the students years dialog for automatically dividing a year by categories), category 1: "Group A", "Group B", category 2: "Group C", "Group D", "Group E", "Group F". I attach an example file.

Then you can use the groups "Level 4 Group A", etc.

Please keep the divisions to a minimum, for the speed of generation. You might use some tricks for this, like using the whole level in an activity for a subject, if this does not disrupt the logic of the timetable.

Thanks Liviu  for your reply.
I want to make it clear. When a student is enrolled in a course, he has to take both the theoretical  and practical parts. And as I said before, theoretical classes are bigger than practical ones. So, for theoretical classes students are divided into two groups, and for practical into 4 groups.
I gave a look to the attached file. You did not use "Divide year by selecting categories ", right?
So simply, I need to use year, groups and subgroups only as in your file.

Second question:
I want to make sure, when I work on the activities. I assign the teachers to the groups not to the subgroups, right?

So, I don't have to use it, right?. Simply, in the year I need to add "Level 4" and in the groups I need to add: " Level 4 Group A, Level 4 Group B, Level 4 Group C, Level 4, Level 4 Group D, Level 4 Group E, Level 4 Group F"

No, I did not make myself clear. I used "Divide year by selecting categories", just that you cannot see exactly how I did this. You need to enter the Groups and the Subgroups dialogs and see there the way FET considers them for year Level 4 (in my file liviu.fet).

I will show you some screenshots, attached.

It is not as simple as you would like, just to add groups. You need also subgroups.

The dialog of dividing a year by categories will retain the last settings, not the settings for that year (a minus point for FET).

It is, indeed, nicer to use the groups than subgroups. And it is recommended so, in your case.

Thanks again Liviu for your screenshots. They make it clear to me :)
