Title: Is it possible to edit the Mode after having chosen one?
Post by: infoo_ on January 10, 2023, 11:26:33 PM
Hello

The schedule I have consists of two turns: Morning and Afternoon. Courses with letters A and B (1A, 1B etc.) go to Morning and courses with letter C (1C, 2C etc.) go to Afternoon.

The first time I started using FET I have selected Official Mode. I have set the periods to be from 1 to 8 (Morning) and 9 to 16 (Afternoon). In total, 16 consecutive periods from Mon to Fri.

I have managed to edit the XML FET file to include the restriction called "A students set's not available times" for each course 1A and 1B (not available Afternoon i.e. 9 to 16), 1C (not available Morning i.e. 1 to 8 ), etc. because there are many years (up to 5).

However, I feel like I should have picked Mornings/Afternoons Mode when I started using FET. Several questions:

What is the advantage of using Mornings/Afternoons Mode? I never used that mode, what should I modify regarding the Official Mode? What can affect all the work I have so far (besides deleting those restrictions)? Is it possible to edit the Mode after I picked Official?

Thanks in advance

Hello,

It is possible to change the mode. The incompatible constraints will be removed (you'll be informed).

Please read the Help about the Mornings-Afternoons mode. It is for Morocco and Algeria (and maybe Vietnam). They need no gaps in the morning or in the afternoon, but allow gaps in between. Also, min 2 hours per morning and min 2 hours per afternoon.

You might need the Official mode if you don't need the above.

Oh, I thought Mornings/Afternoons Mode was useful to separate the morning from the afternoon, but I think that with the official mode I can achieve the same results.

Thanks anyway for telling me that there is a Help button inside FET that explains this!

In Official mode, if you say 0 gaps, you cannot have gaps between morning and afternoon.

The gaps can or cannot be in between "morning" (periods 1 to 8 ) and "afternoon" (periods 9 to 16). I have set the constraint "Students set not available" and marked with X all the periods that are "Afternoon" (9 to 16) to avoid problems assigning a morning course to afternoon hours, so no problems.

By "separate Morning and Afternoon" I mean I thought with these mode, we can create like 2 different Hours type, a dialog box for hours in morning and another dialog box for hours in afternoon. From what you have said, there aren't 2 dialog box, the treatment is the same as in Official mode.

If each students set can be either M or A, but not both, Official mode is OK.
