Title: Processor speed and RAM
Post by: mikkojoo on June 12, 2024, 08:37:40 AM
To get more speed (at reasonable price), I'm wondering what kind of (laptop) processor and how much RAM would be good? I have been using i5 and 8Gb RAM until now, for years.

RAM is not important. You can see the memory consumption for FET is very low. I have 16 GB and 8-core 16 threads Ryzen 2700X for ~6 years now (desktop). More cores are recommended if you generate multiple on multiple threads (which is useful, even when developing the timetable from the beginning). Maybe the cache size and speed is important.

Thanks. Is more processor speed directly more speed on FET when generating single?
I understand that more cores is more speed when generating multiple timetables. I'm looking for more speed when generating with new constraints (and making life miserable). We have about 2500 constraints and 1500 activities in our file.

Each generation is on its own thread, unfortunately. Cannot be solved (algorithm is this way).

But if you generate multiple, some generations are faster. Or if they lock on the same index, it shows a problem.

I wrote that I am interested in your file, if you could send it. Did you see my old post?

We do have timetables, single or multiple. It just takes hours to generate and when we trying to find best solutions, it would be nice to do that even a little bit faster.

Thank you! Received. I will sleep now and see it tomorrow and write you. Thank you also for signing the Guestbook! :)

Is the file private? I would have liked to add it as an example...

Sorry that I have not answered you :-[
It is always the May-June FET and then off. File is no way private, only old now.

No problem! :)
