I'm trying to use FET to setup a unique style of timetable.

Our students are trainee engineers who do 4 days of workshop practical lessons and 1 day of classroom lessons.

  • The workshop lessons are the same subject with the same teacher for 2 to 6 weeks. After this they go to a new subject/teacher for another 2 - 6 weeks
  • The workshop lessons vary in length from 2 to 6 weeks
  • They will be doing workshop 4 out of 5 days in a week
  • They will be doing classroom lessons 1 out of 5 days in a week
  • On a classroom day, they will do 3 different subjects
  • They will have the same 3 subjects on the same day for 1 whole semester = 17 weeks
  • There is one set of classroom teachers and another set of workshop teachers

I'm struggling to think of how to start timetabling this in FET. I think I can create the classroom timetable easily but a combined classroom and workshop timetable is difficult.

Any advice?

Maybe you can use the Official FET mode and simply add 17*5 days. Then you can add activities preferred times constraints.

Or maybe you could use the Terms FET mode (you can read the Help for it). A term will have 5 days and you'll have as many terms as different workshops (a different term for a different week of workshops).

You might want to share with us a previous pdf timetable.
