To simplify the grouping of scientific subjects without using the constraints Activities are grouped and Activities same starting time,
 I considered applying the constraint Activities max hours daily span set to 2.

Would this effectively ensure that the subgroups' activities are scheduled in two consecutive hours within the same half-day, as illustrated in the picture?

You need to add also max 0 half days between them. Otherwise they can be on different half days, or even on different real days, if I remember correctly. Please try a small example.

Similar to the case of 2-hour groups, it should be enough to use the constraint set of activities has same starting  day, and the program will automatically group them within one half-day.
