Apologies if this is an obvious/already dealt with issue.

I work in a foundation program and we have 3 course areas where students will be mixed in different groups. To give an example, student A may be in group 1 for English then group 3 for Biology and group 17 for their project. Student B may be in group 1 for English but then group 17 for Biology and group 8 for their project.

I tried to make each student a subgroup that could sit within different groups but FET won't allow this.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. That looks like exactly what I want to do so clearly I am missing something obvious. I'll have a play around and get back here if it's still a problem.

Thanks again.

PS: To the activities you need only to add groups (not subgroups).

Thanks again. A further question then is whether there is a way we can avoid inputting 700 students (as subgroups) 3 times in order to avoid clashes between the different groupings.

Either write a .fet XML file (open the .fet file above with a text/XML editor and see it), or use import/export of FET, with a file like the attached.

That's a great help. Thanks again. And can I just say how appreciated the software is. A life saver!

Thank you for the appreciation! Please let me know your progress, I am interested.

Hi Liviu,

I have tried your suggestion to create a .csv file that will upload all the students into groups and subgroups but when I attempt the import, all the data is in the 'Years' column. Any idea why this would be? I've attached an example.

Thanks for the help!

I think you want like in the attached file.

I removed in some places extra spaces. Then when importing you need to select Group and Subgroup. See the screen shots.

Hi Again,

I've got another issue with student groups. We have lectures and seminars. In the lectures, there are several seminar groups that are in class together. I have created a subject called Statistics - Seminar and Statistics - Lecture. The seminars are each a single group that meets twice a week. The lecture is 4 of the Statistics - Seminar groups that also meet twice a week. I keep getting an error message when I try to run this. I am attaching the file to see if you can offer some advice.

Also, is there a way to use the csv to include time constraints (e.g. must be Monday/Wednesday before 1200)?

Thanks in advance for your help!

For Seminar and Lecture you could use activity tags.

I am not sure I understand. You want to use my above file liviu.fet with these activities? But the students sets in these activities do not exist. You need to define them in the CSV for students or in the .fet file.

Please let me know.

Unfortunately, no. Only if you write .fet XML compatible code.

Thanks for the responses to both questions. I've worked out the issue now.

Much appreciated!
