Talk It Up! / Re: school administration software
May 04, 2014, 02:00:45 AM
I realize that this topic is a bit dated; but, now that I have FET working it is time to add some complexity to my life again.  I am interested in recommendations for school administration software.

In particular I need:
Easy to set up and use -- This is a must and I realize it is very subjective

Student register
Attendance tracking
Grade tracking

I would really:
Discipline activity tracking

We are a private school; so I would also like:
Tuition and fees tracking

Linux is fine, I need it to be accessible by the teachers, ideally from individual computers on the network (we really don't have a network yet, I am arguing with our parent organization about that)

Praise and Feedback / Re: Just to say thank you
May 03, 2014, 11:58:50 PM
The title to this topic said what I wanted to say. I just wanted to thank you not only for the work you put into the program; but also the work you put into support. Without the handholding I doubt I would have gotten FET to work for me.

Now that I do have it working it is making my job, as an academic director, much simpler.

Thank you very much.

I realize I am a bit quick to blame "the great firewall of China" when things don't work right, generally the blame is well placed; however, this time it was clearly my mistake (even if I don't see why the original link never opened). This newly compiled version opened just fine. So now we can confirm that there is a "Mavericks" (10.9.2) executable.

Again, thank you.

Did you try: http://fet.lmi2me.com/download/ (or, directly, http://fet.lmi2me.com/download/fet-5.21.2.zip ) ?

Those two worked; but, the only things in the download directory were:
Quote[DIR]   Parent Directory        -
[ ]   fet-5.19.0.zip    03-Sep-2013 08:01    22M
[ ]   fet-5.21.2.zip    13-Apr-2014 10:55    31M

The mac file is not there

Please try the new version from the same link: 5.21.2

Now I cant access it. I have just left Shanghai for Jiangsu, it is possible that the drop box you are using is blocked in this province.

I will keep trying.

. . . sorry to be a nuisance about this; but the stuff you would expect to be available, like Qt, are blocked

Can anyone send me a copy that runs on OSx Mavricks 10.9.2?

I am in China and cannot download anything form Apple (I have contacted customer support and gone to the apple store to correct this, we are not going to fix it here; it will not be resolved until I return to the US). To make things worse, while there I allowed them to up date my system to the latest OS. Now FET is not working at all.

When I try to run it I get:

Get Help / Re: Handeling Electives

Ok, I did that and now in Activities>Students I have A2 Thinking Skills Economics and A2 Thinking Skills Chemistry How do I put these two groups of students into one thinking skills class?

Get Help / Handeling Electives
April 07, 2014, 08:02:57 AM
I have a timetable almost done. I am generating:

Year one (IG) just fine, this year has no electives

Tear two (AS) fine, thus year has two electives, Further Maths and Thinking Skills
To make this one work I created two groups in year AS, called Further Maths and Thinking Skills These two classes can run concurrently, a student who is in one is not in the other.

Year three is my problem. I have four electives
pair 1: Further Maths and thinking Skills
Pair 2:Economics and Chemistry

When I created a set of groups Further Maths and Thinking Skills it worked like the AS year; but, I also want a student to be able to substitute pair 2. (A student in further Maths might be in either Economics or Chemistry; similarly, a student in Thinking Skills might be in either Economics or Chemistry.)

How can I do this?

Get Help / Re: Still trying to understand activities
March 04, 2014, 10:01:18 AM
So to be clear, I need to make an activity called " AS English Grammar - 1", "AS English Grammar - 2" "AS English Grammar - 3" . . . "AS English grammar 5"

"AS Math 1" . . . "AS Math 7"
"AS ECON 1" . . . "AS Econ 7"

and so on for each topic

So, in the DATA > Subjects screen, for each subject, that meets seven times a week, it would be listed seven times?

As I understand it, a single class is a single activity. So, if that is the case then if English Grammar meets five times per week I need to make five distinct activities, is that correct?

The same for English reading and English listening, math and other classes, is this right?

Get Help / Re: I don't understand groups / subgroups
February 20, 2014, 06:34:47 AM
I would like to ask a similar question because I clearly do not understand Groups and Subgroups. Please do not laugh at our size, we are a small school; small enough (36 students) that this year I easily did the scheduling by hand. But, next year 2014-2105 the main campus plans to double our size (an added 40 students), and the next year 2015-2016 they intend to double us again with an added 150-160 students. I clearly need to get started out doing things right or in two years this will be unmanageable.

We have an IG class (apx. grade 9) of 24. Of that class eight of them are in a Intensive English class that takes them out of Business and English classes (this allows us to split the English class into a High and Low level).

IG - 24
Intensive English Track - 8
Standard English Track - 16

To make this more confusing, I have one student who goes to Intensive English for all of those class except for those which coincide with Business, in those periods he goes to Business.

Next year the current IG students will be in AS and 40 incoming students will be in IG

This years AS class has 18 students
5 of them are in Chemistry
13 of them are in Economics

Next year these students will be in A2

"sum of duration of the activities for that teacher" that is not in my version.

Is that the same as Data > Time Constraints > Teachers > "A teacher works in an hourly interval max days per week"

I am using Version: 5.19.0 (January 2013) in OSX in English

Where is it entered? Does it need to be typed directly into the data file?

I have looked and I cannot find it, before posting this I did a forum search on the word "week."
