Preferred room for a teacher in a specific time interval

Thank you very much for your continuous work and dedication to improving FET. I truly appreciate your ongoing updates and your openness to new suggestions.

I would like to propose a new possible constraint named:
"Preferred room for a teacher in a specific time interval."

This constraint would allow assigning a preferred room to a particular teacher during defined time periods.

It would be especially useful in situations such as:

When a teacher needs to stay in the same room from Monday to Friday for better stability and organization.

While on Saturday, teachers can freely change their rooms or be assigned randomly, depending on the schedule.


This feature would bring more flexibility and realism to timetables, particularly in institutions where teachers have fixed rooms most of the week but variable rooms on certain days.

I added your words in the TODO list (suggestions list), but it is quite difficult. Maybe a good thing in FET would be to double each type of home and preferred room(s) constraint to a new constraint type, to action only in a selection of time slots.

This can be achieved by assigning preferred rooms to each teacher and adding constraints for unavailable times for both room and teacher — particularly for rooms other than the one the teacher prefers to use at specific times.

Thank you for adding this suggestion to the TODO list.

I think your idea of extending the existing Home Room and Preferred Room(s) constraints to work on selected time slots would be an excellent and more general solution than introducing a completely new constraint.

The current workaround using unavailable times for teachers and rooms is possible, but it requires creating many additional constraints, making the timetable more complex and difficult to maintain, especially in large institutions.

Allowing the existing room constraints to apply only to selected time slots would provide a much cleaner and more flexible solution while remaining fully consistent with FET's current design.
