year, group and subgroups

I've just installed FET and I'm a bit confused. In my school the students are divided into 3 periods: morning period, afternoon period and night period. Morning and afternoon periods have 7 levels (from 11 years old to 17 years old), night period have only the last 3 levels. Each level have 3 (sometimes 2) classes (groups of about 30 students that are together in the same room). Should period be what FET calls "year" and levels be the what FET calls "groups" and classes be what FET calls "subgroups"?

Another problem, sometimes classes are divided into two, half have arts and the other half have music. Again sometimes the classes are divided into two and half have french and half have spanish. How do I do that?

you can call it like you want, just the printed tables look a bit different in that case.

don't forget you can print "year", "groups" and "subgroups" tables. maybe view the german secondary school sample file and view that tables to understand what i mean.

if i understand correct, then you use the word "periods" in two (differnet) ways at the same time, because it sound like you use that for a schedule time at a day and also for the form name of the students.
that doesn't matter, you can do that. in that case i think it is the best to add the years:
- morning 1
- morning 2
- ...
- morning 7
- afternoon 1
- afternoon 2
- ...
- afternoon 7
- night 1
- ...
- night 3

year "moning 1" have 3 classes.
so group "morning 1 A"
group "morning 1 B"
and group "morning 1 C"

if for example group "morning 1 A" is divided into two part (music and art), then group "morning 1 A" contain two subgroups "morning 1 A music" and subgroup "morning 1 A art".

the "subgroup" is the smallest "part", in "bad case" it is a single student.

if "morning 1 A music" and "morning 1 B music" is an activity with the same teacher at the same time. so both group together, you can/should thing about adding a group "moring 1 music" with subgroups "morning 1 A music" and subgroup "morning 1 B music".

use the divide year automaticly for that.
