You are welcome, dear Matheem! Glad it works!  :)

Please see the attached file, I made for IDs 214 and 215 without GA_ALIZA, and it solves very easily. Please see the resulted timetable and consider what you can do to solve the problem.

Hello, Matheen,

I tried your file, deactivating activities IDs 214 and 215, and it solves instantly. I think you have a too constrained activity planning. Are all your activities necessary, or some are optional? FET can only manage necessary activities.

A single subgroup can have a single activity at any time slot.

Dear Matheen,

You are welcome!

The division of years by categories was introduced before the most FET examples that I have. There is a file examples/official/by-Volker-Dirr/German_subact_constr.fet, and for instance in year 5 you have two categories: (a, b, c, d) and (MF, DF, EF, MP, DP). But at the time when we added that example file, FET did not store the categories and divisions in the Divide year dialog.

Basically, each category has more some divisions. Like to say that the students have English, French, or German, and Physics or Chemistry, you add 2 categories: (E, F, G) and (P, C). There will be 3+2=5 groups in this year and 3*2=6 subgroups.

I can explain some more if needed. I think also Volker wrote about year division in his manual.

Liviu.

Dear Mohammed,

Is this your first introduction to FET, or did you already make some successful timetables?

I think you need to divide each year automatically according to categories (Years > Divide year by selecting categories). This will generate the correct and needed groups and subgroups. In the activities, probably you will only use the groups, but please don't remove the subgroups, they are used internally!

Let me know how this works!

Liviu.

Yes, I think Volker means max 6, not 7, for dummies.

I always prefer not to add dummy activities, they involve additional computation and are not elegant. But if you use them, yes, I think you should group them in the initial order with the real ones.

I would prefer for number 6 the Method 1.

I don't have other ideas.

Hello, yush,

The new FET-7.8.7 is released. Thank you for the collaboration!

On Monday, 15 June 2026, we released FET-7.8.7. From the ChangeLog:

  - Critical interface bug fixes: When removing an activity tag in the constraints of type teachers/students max activity tags per day/real day from set or modifying/removing an activity tag in the constraints of type room(s) max activity tags per day/real day/week from set, the constraints were not correctly updated (reported by Yush Yuen).
  - Improved the English text - instead of 'he', 'his', and 'him' pronouns when referring to a teacher, we use 'he/she', 'his/her', and 'him/her' (suggested by Alexandre R. Soares and Andrea Primiani).
  - Improved the symbol for the 'not available' cells in the constraints of type 'not available' or 'preferred times' - it is now '✗' instead of 'X'. Also, the description of the deactivated activities and constraints now begins with '✗' instead of 'X'.
  - Added a Help button in the days and hours dialogs, for guidance; this is useful in modes other than the Official one (suggested by LEOBASSARTS).
  - Added the option to order the activities in the timetables by the tags, if a table cell contains more than one activity (suggested by Benahmed Abdelkrim; Volker Dirr suggested to consider only the printable tags).
  - Minor fixes.
  - Updated the Spanish translation, by Li Chong, who is the newly assigned translator. The Spanish translation is now nearly complete.
  - Added a new example file, by Benahmed Abdelkrim.

Thanking Li Chong, and welcoming him in the team of translators!

Great! Please let me know if we need to add this example to FET!

Great, Benahmed! We'll keep as now. I hope to release FET-7.8.7 on Monday early morning.

The feature was suggested by you. If you consider that we should sort even by unprintable tags, we could do this your way. Please let me know which option is more logic to you!

But I think as it is now is more correct (only printable tags considered).

Hmm... Benahmed, but the unprintable tags are simply ignored in the order.

Hmm... R1 has a tag, but R'1 and R''1 do not? I see that in your screenshot.

Thank you for your feedback! However, empty should come before something nonempty. You need to add a tag to each activity having none, a tag which is greater (after) the tag of the first desired activity.
